Title: Aftershock
Author: Jill Atkins
Text Type: Novel
Date: 21/09/17
The novel Aftershock by Jill Atkins is about a family of four who decide to take a holiday and go to an island they call paradise. One beautiful day they experience a disaster that changed their lives. 'Paradise' was struck by an enormous tsunami.
It got me thinking about how easy someone can be taken away from you. It also made me think about being nice to people because you never know if when you see them will be the last time you see them or not. In this novel, the main character Madeleine and her mother have an argument about what Maddy was wearing and how much make up she had on. Madeleine then tells her mother she hates her before running away. Madeleine regrets what she had said to her mother once the tsunami had hit and she could not find her mother anywhere. This got me thinking about how most teenagers treat their parents without realizing what could happen a second after they say the nasty words like "i hate you".
An important lesson to learn from this novel is to listen to your parents about what they think because most of the time, they are just trying to help you or keep you safe. In this novel, Madeleine does not listen to her mother when she tries to tell her to change her bikini because it is showing to much skin or to take off some of the make up she is wearing because it makes her look so much older than she is. Her mother was trying to keep her safe because wearing a bikini that shows too much of her body and wearing lots of make up to make her look older could put her daughter in danger. In can put her in danger because there are creeps in the world that could try kidnap her or even rape her, but Madeleine did not think about that. Most teenage girls leave the house showing a lot of cleavage and wearing really tight pants to show off their 'curves', but they don't realize the danger of all of that. It might be cool to do that in front of your crush so they think you have a nice body but what about when your walking home at night down a long dark alley way and a creepy elder man thinks that your body is nice too?

Title: Apollo 13
Author: William Broyles JR, AL Reinert and John Sayles
Text type: Novel
Date: 20/09/17
The novel Apollo 13 by William Broyles Jr, Al Reinert and John Sayles is about three astronauts whose plan was to get to the moon. Their plans all changed when they began to face life threatening events on board the ship. While almost 320,000 kilometers above earth, engines started to shut down, they had an oxygen spill and they also started to lose power that they needed to get them back down to earth. In the end of this novel, the three astronauts returned home safely with the help of the mission control group in Texas.
An important idea to learn from this text, is what teamwork really is. Teamwork is not only about working together, but also caring for on another and making sure everyone you are working with is okay. Teamwork also covers things like good communication and leadership skills. Teamwork was shown in dept throughout this novel. We see it most when the spaceship had started to have technical difficulties. The men on board were demonstrating teamwork when they had to figure out what to do to get them back down to earth safely. Lifting their sick friend Fred, throwing heaving objects from one side of the spaceship to another and yelling across numbers so another astronaut could press the correct controls, all are great examples of what teamwork skills were showed in this novel. Teamwork is becoming weaker and weaker every day. I think that it needs to be used more around the world, not only in sports teams but in the wider world. If we don't start to use teamwork, where will we be in 20 years?
This text is relevant to students my age because one of the main points behind it is to be committed. Not only committed to sports teams, school or work, but also committed to your goal in life. In this novel, one of the main characters Jim, had a goal to be one of the lucky men to walk on the moon. The first Apollo Jim went on, only went around the moon, not on it so he never got to walk on it. When Jim was on Apollo 13, he was passionate and committed to the idea of him not being the first, but just being a lucky man who gets to walk on the moon. Even though Jim did not get what he desired, he was still committed to the idea but had to change his way of thinking and begin committing his ideas on how he could get him and his crew home safely. Teenagers these days like to give up on things if it doesn't work for them the first time. Being committed to something means you just don't stop until you get what you want and/ or need. I think we need our society to be filled with people who are passionate and committed to their goals in life. If you don't have a goal, how are you going to get anywhere in life?

Title: Suicide Prevention
Author: Youth.GOV
Text Type: Article
Date: 18/09/17
The article Suicide Prevention published by Youth.GOV, explains why suicide attempts and thoughts are caused and who they affect the most. It also talks about not only getting help from doctors, but also from teacher, mentors, friends and family members and how that extra support can save a life.
This article taught me how easy it is to feel suicidal. It stated that the years between childhood and adulthood are critical because it is a transition where your mental, emotional and social well being changes. Adolescence is also a time of growth, proving your potential, education, employment and relationships. These few things can all be very stressful and can lead to mental health problems which can also increase the risk of suicide. I think that people these days need to remove things off their schedule so they can have a break or some time just for themselves, because some people get to occupied and start to stress more than the healthy amount. Stressing to much and being too busy all the time can also lead to suicidal thoughts and other possible harmful events.
This article made me think about what others could do to prevent someone harming themselves. It is stated in this article that the ages that are getting effected by suicide the most are from 15 to 24. It is also said that teenagers that have been involved in child welfare and juvenile are more likely to attempt suicide. It also goes for people who are finding it hard to come out or be accepted. Like lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender. There is also a large amount of military service members that have committed suicide due to not being able to live with what they have done, e.g Fighting/ killing for their country. In this article it also talks about other types of support that is around people that they don't know could really help them. Some people can go see a doctor and then they will be fine with that but others need a different kind of support, a loving and caring support. They could go to their parents, friends, coaches and even teachers or youth leaders. All these people will be able to sit down and have a conversation with the person being effected and just show them love and let them know they care. I think that most people these days don't go get help when they need it. Some people notice it and talk to someone about it, but others don't. I think that we should be notified on what to look out for in someone who has depression or is feeling suicidal so we can help. If they don't see in in themselves, someone needs to before it is too late!

Title: 127 Hours
Director: Danny Boyle
Text Type: Film
Date: 11/09/17
In the film 127 Hours by Danny Boyle, the main character Aron Ralston becomes trapped while exploring a remote canyon in Utah, when a boulder falls on his arm. Over the next five days, Aron examines his options and considers his life. This leads him to the agonizing choice of amputating his arm so that he can free himself and try make his way back to civilization. If he didn't amputate his arm he would remain pinned to the wall of the canyon and most likely die.
I think that this film would be good to watch if you were someone who enjoys to explore great things. Not only because it raises awareness of what could happen to you while out there in a remote place alone, but when we see Aron packing his bags, it gives good examples of things you could take with you while hiking. This film shows that he is a dedicated man and does not want to give up no matter what he has to sacrifice.
I thought that this film would be relevant to my age group. Not about exploring canyons, but because most teenagers these days, rely on signal from their phones or wifi to contact people if they need help. But what would they do if there was no signal or wifi? This film demonstrates resilience and initiative. We see these skills being put in place when Aron is deciding what he is going to do next once he gets trapped. This film also gives great examples on how to survive on your own in the wilderness.

Title: I will never stop feeling responsible
Author: Jordan Derosier
Text Type: Article
Date: 07/07/17
"I will never stop feeling responsible" by Jordan Derosier is an article about a mother of 2, whose 7 month old son passed away after being tangles in a blanket in his cot.
This text made me feel sad because although what happened to the baby was horrible, the mother would never be able to stop blaming herself for the death of her 7 month old son. A good example to show she will not forgive herself is in the title when it says "I will never stop feeling responsible". I felt sorry for her because of how much pain this has caused the poor lady and how she will never be able to let it go. I think this article needs to be spread around the world so Mothers can understand the danger of little things such as a putting a baby to bed with a blanket.
This article taught me that what you think wont be harmful at all could kill. For example the part where it states "They found him with a grey blanket wrapped around the baby boy's head so he was trapped", shows that even a blanket can be a dangerous thing for a baby to be left with unsupervised. It is important that this message gets out there so our society is aware of major danger of minor things.

Anatomy
Wednesday 8th February 2017
Learning Outcome: To be able to identify the bones of the body, the function of the skeleton and to know what different types of bones are.
206 Bones in a human body.
200 Joints in a human body.
The skeleton is the body connective tissue that makes up general framework of the body.
Support: Give support for organs and tissue so they don’t collapse.
Protection: Provides protections for vital organs such as the heart and lungs.
Supply of red blood cells:Supplies red and white blood cells which are produced in marrow (Long Bones - Humerus, Femur).
Movement: Where bones meet, joints are formed, and in combination with muscles, it creates movement.
Storage: Minerals are stored in bones (Calcium).
The Axial skeleton consists of the centre of the body - the skull, the vertebrae and the ribcage.
The Appendicular skeleton consists of the outer body - arms, legs, shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle.
Types of bones
Long bone - Humerus, Femur
Flat bone - Bones of the skull
Irregular - Vertebrae
Short bone - Carpals, Tarsals
Monday 13th February 2017
Learning Outcome: Understand what quality performance means. Be able to describe a quality performance and be able to break a performance down to sequences.
‘Quality’ - is the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind, the degree of excellence of something.
Notes for discuss:
Grip - Space out fingers, make sure thumb is inline with your arm
Release - Index finger touches the discuss last, snap at the hips and left arm, 2 swings after release
Stance - Side on,legs spread wide, transfer weight from back leg to front when swinging arm and pivot foot also whilst transferring the weight, left foot side on at the top of the circle.
Notes for shot put:
Start Position and Grip - Hold in finger tips, wide elbow, shot against neck under jaw line, facing back of the circle.
Balance - Arm up, lean forward, hop on right leg and extend left leg backwards.
Release - Side on, rotating core, follow through.
Release - Side on, rotating core, follow through.
Notes for Javelin:
Grip - High over right shoulder with an ‘American Grip’, point at target.
Stance - Hips straight to the throwing line.
Run Up - Accelerate smoothly towards the throwing line, keep hips straight to the line, the left leg crosses over the right as you pull the Javelin through in your final strides.
Release - Arm straight with hand at shoulder height, keep javelin straight inline with shoulder, plant left leg and push off right, bring arm up and forward, keeping elbow high, release when the javelin is as high as possible, follow through.
Monday 6th March 2017
Learning Outcome: Be able to recall the types of joints, the types of movements and understand and describe the agonist and antagonist.
Pivot - Neck
Hinge - Elbow
Saddle - Carpometacarpal
Plane - Metacarpals
Condyloid - Carpals
Ball in Socket - Hip
Agonist - means the muscles contracting. Also known as the prime mover.
Antagonist - means the muscles relaxing.
Muscles must contract and relax in pairs to enable movement to occur. This pairing is known as the agonist and antagonist.
Antagonistic Muscle Group List
Bicep - Tricep
Back - Chest
Abs - Lower back
Shoulder - Chest/Back
Quadriceps - Hamstring
Tibialis Anterior - Gastrocnemius
Anterior Deltoid - Posterior Deltoid
Latissimus Dorsi - Deltoid
Pectoralis Major - Trapezius
Iliopsoas - Gluteus Maximus
Adductor Group - Gluteus Maximus
Wednesday 8th March 2017
Learning Outcome: Demonstrate with confidence my understanding of joint types, joint movements, agonist and antagonist muscles.
Human Skeleton System
Skeleton protects internal organs, provides framework that allows us to stand upright and move. Stores minerals that our body need and produces blood cells.
Compact Bones - Dense, smooth and strong
Cancellous Bones - Spongy, lightweight
They both contain living cells which help make repairs if injured or broken.
Long bone has shaft called diaphysis (compact) and two bones called Periosteum.
Muscles and tendons attach themselves to the Periosteum.
Bone marrow stores fat, produces blood cell and is inside the medullary cavity inside the shaft.
Monday 12th March 2017
Learning Outcome: Recall what i have been taught and be able to explain in detail how a body moves and why it moves the way it does.
When a movement occurs such as throwing a ball, just before the end of the movement, the antagonist will begin to contract. This Is one factor that prevents the joint from hyperextension.
The joint in the movement i'm discussing is the knee, also known as the hinge joint. The movement that is occurring in the knee joint is flexion to extension. The agonist is the hamstring and the antagonist is the Quadricep. This movement occurs when the knee is bending and in flexion because the muscles work in pairs. The hamstring contracts and pulls the joint so your knee bends. The next movement is extension, when going to release the ball. The agonist is the Quadricep and the hamstring is the antagonist.
Wednesday 15th March 2017
Learning Outcome: Understand what the different types of muscles are and the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles. Be able to explain movement in detail.
Muscle Definition - Muscles are long bundles of contractile tissue that formed bass of all movements and give contour to the body.
- Cardiac muscle cell - Around heart
- Skeletal muscle cell = enable us to carry movements - around bone
- Smooth muscle cell - around organ
Cardiac muscles, found in the heart, makeup walls of heard and are capable of quick and rapid movement and do not tire easy.
Involuntary
Skeleton muscles join bones together and are held in place by tendons.
Voluntary
Smooth muscles, found in the stomach and intestines, perform slow, long term contractions.
Involuntary

Title: Losing Isaiah
Author: Stephen Gyllenhaal
Text Type: Film
Date: 22/03/17
Losing Isaiah is a film about a crack addicted mother who leaves her son in a box by a rubbish bin to go get high. When she wakes up the next morning she remembers what she's done and rushes back to where she left him to find out he's gone. After losing her son she goes to rehab and 3 years later finds out that her son is not dead, he is living with another family and was rescued by the rubbish man and taken to hospital.
This film raises issues relevant to our future because drugs are becoming a huge part of everyday life for people who have been or are being brought up around the influence of drugs. In the film we saw drugs when Khalia Richards (Halle Berry) went into a crack house after dropping her baby off in a garbage box. This shows what can happen if you are heavily addicted to a drugs and it affects it can have on not only you, but also your children.
I felt sorry for Isaiah because of what his mother had done. After he was rescued by the garbage man he was rushed to hospital and adopted into a white family. The lady that adopted him was one of the nurses taking care of him in the hospital. In this scene you see the acceptance that The nurse and her family had for Isaiah even though he was a coloured child. I think that we need more people like this in the world because acceptance is value that everyone needs.
